The Kannauj assembly was held in the year 643 AD. This was in honour of Hieun Tsang (Chinese pilgrim) and to popularise Mahayana sect of Buddhism. Harshavardhana was a Mahayana Buddhist. He organized the Kannauj assembly (643 AD) to popularise the Mahayana sect of Buddhism.
